Health study funding secured for community

23 March 2010

Independent candidate for Upper Hunter Tim Duddy today announced a private funding arrangement that will kick-start a health study for the Upper Hunter to investigate the potential health impacts of local coal mining.

Mr Duddy said, "It is a pleasure to have been involved in bringing Beyond Zero Emissions, the University of Sydney and the Singleton Healthy Environment Group together to kick start this project.

"Today I announce that funding has been secured for the first phase of a coal health study. Climate and Energy think tank, Beyond Zero Emissions arranged the funding for the development of the terms of reference and a literature review to support the full study.

Dr John Drinan from the Singleton Healthy Environment Group said, "This is a most welcome announcement. International research and the investigations underway by NSW Health have shown that residents of the Hunter have good reason to believe their health is being affected by living with coal mining and coal-fired power generation.

"This studywill bring everyone up to date with the latest and best information from Australia and around the world. That will boost the drive for adoption of world's best practice by mines and power generators so that residents and workers are protected from the airborne pollution they are now suffering", Dr Drinan said.

Ms Ruth Colagiuri, Associate Professor at the Menzies Centre for Health Policy at the University of Sydney said, "For generations we have associated massive health harms such as debilitating and sometime deadly lung disease with mining. Recent health studies are now illustrating a strong association between particulate air pollution and other common chronic diseases such as type 2 diabetes," Ms Colagiuri said.

Mr Duddy has called on the next government to get on board with supporting a full study, saying, "whoever is in government next week needs to commit to supporting a full study and contribute to the next phase of this project which is the detailed investigation. If health risks are identified immediate steps need to be taken to improve industry practice and keep this community safe.

"It is not acceptable that government allows the health of children and workers to be put at risk because they refuse to do the work to assess the risks.

"Regardless of the result, I look forward to working with the groups involved in the study," Mr Duddy said.

A New Voice for Upper Hunter

Dear Friends,
Over the last few years I have been fighting alongside many of you against the injustice of a system in NSW that has seen local communities and property owners sacrificed to satisfy mining interests.

As we fought to preserve this area for future food and fibre production we discovered the traditional political parties have turned their backs on regional Australia. They have continued to put the interests of mining companies ahead of local communities and sustainable industries.

I want to bring a strong new voice to Upper Hunter that is about fairness, protecting productive agricultural land and valuable water resources, encouraging diversity and putting the local communities first.

We need to restore balance and fairness. Given the enormous contribution to the NSW coffers, the local community deserves more.

It’s time we had a say in the future of Upper Hunter.

Teachers need to be supported

15 March 2010

Independent candidate for Upper Hunter Tim Duddy has called for more support for teachers in the Upper Hunter.

Mr Duddy said, "In this area, where large mining incomes push up the cost of living for everyone, it is often difficult to attract and retain teachers.

"We have a number of great public and non-government schools in this electorate, with excellent teachers, but more funding is needed to bring facilities into the 21st century. Investment in more teachers is essential to reduce class sizes and improve opportunities for children with special needs.

"It is also vital that we get seatbelts into our regional school buses. It is not acceptable that we have school children travelling at speed on a major busy highway without the protection of seatbelt. There are solutions so lets put them in place now.

"I am absolutely committed to the Better State plan to invest in TAFE. In an area with significant employment in industry, mining and agriculture, vocational training in the TAFE system is an important training pathway for young people and a re-skilling option for adult workers.

"I am particularly concerned about the attacks from Labor over the past couple of years on the TAFE system. The wage and conditions battle has seen
professional development opportunities cut and a casualization of TAFE teachers.

"There is a push from both major parties to privatize TAFE courses. This approach will lead to profits being put ahead educational outcomes and could
lock some individuals out of the vocational education system altogether.

"If I am elected I will be a loud and passionate advocate for teachers and the education system," Mr Duddy said.
